ABOUT THE WORK OF SARAH WESTPHAL
|

In my work I am exploring the relationships between people, objects, their surrounding and
their environment. How does a location influence us physically and psychologically? How
does a space refer to its former inhabitants; which imprints are left, and which stories can be
read from the layered history or the corporeality of space?
In a kind of archaeological research of layers of reality I reveal, camouflage and reconstruct
missing links. By these minimal and meticulous actions I manipulate the essence of the
found situation. This leads to sober but complex moveable, mental, (un)real and fictive
constructions where space unfolds itself through a specific use of images, projections that
shift in between two and three dimensionality, and subtle interventions in spaces that you
can enter.
By investigating the tensions between the (in)visible, the appearing, and the concealed,
I explore what’s hidden under the surface of spaces, and manipulate our projected asso-
ciations by the (unconscious) presence of things
